Junior Research Fellow

John Ó hÉanaigh McGarry attained his Bachelor’s Degree in History and Political Science from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2015. Upon graduation, he moved to the Netherlands and attained a MSc in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Using this experience to further his intellectual pursuits, he decided to pursue a second Master’s in History at his alma mater UCD in 2018, earning a first-class honours degree.

Realising that his interests lay in relations between East and West, he left Ireland to live in the People’s Republic of China for half a decade, learning the Chinese language and living among its citizens, thereby attaining an understanding and deep appreciation of China and her culture. After five years in China, he then spent a year studying traditional Chinese at National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei and is now a PhD candidate at University College Dublin, researching the Reagan administration’s policies towards both China and Taiwan.

He is proficient in the Chinese language (Mandarin), capable of reading in both simplified and traditional.

His research interests relate to military equipment and technologies, defence strategies, and transatlantic and transpacific relations.
